Pointe Claire, a quiet community located in The West Island of Montreal is home to a number of small-scale businesses. People unfamiliar with the term tend to think it's a separate island somewhere west from Montreal, but in fact the West Island is home to all things that belong to Lachine west to Lachine west. Amanda Brugel was born there as well. The only thing is that she visited for a few days. Brugel had a childhood in Courtice near Oshawa, Ontario. Her first ambition was to be a dancer, however, her growth spurt led to that she literally outgrew her dance partners. In an article published by the Toronto Star, she confessed, "In heels I am 6'1 inches tall." When I outgrew my male friends then I slowed down. Some former dancers switch to acting and in the case of Brugel, it was a suggestion from the drama instructor at her high school which pushed her in the proper direction. It was the teacher who recommended she try her hand at a character in the annual school production. She tried out and got the role of character for the role of Rita in Anne of Green Gables. This led to the award of a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2000.In the 20+ years since, Brugel has landed roles in more than 60 productions on the big and small screens, drawing the most media attention after she got the role of Rita on the award-winning television series, The Handmaid's Tale
