LadyLady Starlight, a performance artist, was introduced to Gaga at the time. Gaga was signed to Streamline Records by Vince Herbert in 2007 following a performance at Lollapalooza Festival 2007. While working as an apprentice songwriter in an internship at Famous Music Publishing, which was later acquired by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Gaga was then able to sign a music publishing agreement with Sony/ATV. As a result, she was hired to write songs for Britney Spears and labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. The album she released first, "The Fame", was released in 2008 to little interest from the radio. Gaga went on tour in Europe and the US to promote her album. However, it was not until Gaga had her first hit, "Just Dance", that the mainstream media began to be paid to the music industry. Gaga was suffering from a tear in the labrum on her right hip, which she was nursing in secret for several weeks in belief that she would be able to continue her tour. Following her show in Toronto Gaga became unable to walk without suffering extreme discomfort. She was admitted to the hospital and her tour was cancelled.
